How does microneedling work?

Microneedling uses a treatment handpiece covered in tiny, sterile needles to create miniscule channels into the deeper layers of your skin. Your body perceives each of these tiny punctures as a micro-injury and launches a swift healing response.

Your system manufactures new collagen and elastin cells to repair the perceived damage. This works to clear, smooth, and tighten your skin, improving a wide range of common skin complaints.

Microneedling also reduces inflammation and boosts circulation, both of which improve the look and feel of your skin.

What kinds of skin issues can microneedling treat?

One of the reasons why microneedling is such a popular treatment option is its ability to improve more than one skin issue at a time. Some of the conditions that respond well to microneedling include:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores
  • Stretch marks
  • Acne scarring
  • Loose or crepey skin
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Hyperpigmentation

Many people find that microneedling sessions deliver an overall improvement in the way their skin looks and feels. If you are trying to correct specific issues, a series of treatments spaced out over time might be the best approach.

Microneedling is most commonly performed on the face but can also deliver impressive results on your body. If you have areas where stretch marks or hyperpigmentation have changed the appearance of your skin, consider microneedling as a treatment avenue.

Is microneedling painful?

All this talk of needles, punctures, and healing might lead you to believe that microneedling is a painful experience. In reality, most patients find microneedling to be easily tolerated. You might feel a mild stinging or burning sensation during sessions, but no significant pain exists.

Just let Amanda know if you have sensitive skin or are anxious about discomfort during sessions. You can apply a numbing cream before your appointment to reduce sensation in the treatment area.

A degree of redness, swelling, and sensitivity is to be expected in the hours and days after your sessions. Some people report the sensation as similar to having a mild sunburn. However, your skin will quickly adjust, and you’ll see the results develop over the following weeks.
